The four basic guilt groups, except that I replaced ‘mother’ with ‘shopping’.

Cathy Lee Guisewite (born September 5, 1950) is an American cartoonist who created the comic strip Cathy, which had a 34-year run. The strip focused on a career woman facing the issues and challenges of eating, work, relationships and having a mother—or as the character put it in one strip, “the four basic guilt groups.”

Eating

The feeling of being unable to pull on your usual pair of jeans and wondering if it is irony that the version is named ‘Skinny’ jeans from Gap, and I no longer am skinny or have a thigh gap.

Work

I want a child and a family and I also want the freedom to book flight tickets and not tell anyone where I am going. Or bring anyone along. Or account to other people how I spend my money. I also want to be able to buy a corgi and name it ‘Cheesecake’ when I am in need of company.

Relationships
Relationships, or the lack of a partner in my life, plus all the things I would like to do that doesn’t involve other people.

Shopping
